Three friends and fellow cycling enthusiasts and myself are racing in the Tour de Timor for The Alola Foundation. While the race is not linked to fundraising, we thought it would be a great chance to raise money and awareness for an East Timor organization.
Tour de Timor
The Tour de Timor is a 5 day mountain bike race thru East Timor covering 450km. The race follows the primary roads through the country but because they are in such bad condition, particpants must ride mountain bikes instead of road bikes which would normally be used for such a race in more developed countries. The field consists of 300 riders competing for a $75,000 purse.
Alola Foundation
The Alola Foundation works with women and children in Timor-Leste in the areas of Maternal and Child Health, Education, Economic Development and Advocacy. With your help Alola's motto is making a difference in Timor-Leste - Strong Women Strong Nation - giving women a voice for change.
The idea with riding in the Tour de Timor for charity all started when a collegue mentioned his walk across Java in the late '90s to raise money for Indonesian Charities. While we are off to a late start to raise money for The Alola Foundation, our team hopes to raise several thousand dollars. I've kicked off the fundraising with a $1000 donation to their cause.
100% of funds raised go directly to The Alola Foundation. Our team is paying for all race expenses and a support vehicle is being provided by my employeer ConocoPhillips who is also fully sponsering two teams local East Timorese teams.
There are three easy ways to contribute to The Alola Foundation:
